Job Overview: AC Technician

An AC Technician installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They work on a variety of HVAC equipment, including air conditioners, heaters, and ventilation systems, ensuring that these systems operate efficiently and reliably.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Installation: Install new HVAC systems, including air conditioners, heaters, and ventilation units. Ensure that installations are performed according to manufacturer specifications and local codes.

  2. Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure they operate efficiently. This includes cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, and inspecting system components.

  3. Repair: Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with HVAC systems. Repair or replace faulty components, such as compressors, motors, and thermostats, to restore systems to proper working order.

  4. System Inspections: Conduct inspections of HVAC systems to assess performance and identify potential issues. Provide recommendations for repairs or upgrades based on inspection findings.

  5. Customer Service: Communicate with clients to understand their HVAC needs and provide solutions. Explain HVAC issues, repair options, and maintenance procedures in a clear and professional manner.

  6. Refrigerant Handling: Handle and manage refrigerants according to regulations and environmental guidelines. Ensure proper recovery, recycling, and disposal of refrigerants.

  7. System Upgrades: Upgrade and retrofit HVAC systems with new technologies to improve efficiency and performance. Install energy-efficient components and controls as needed.

  8. Troubleshooting: Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify problems with HVAC systems. Perform tests to determine the cause of issues and implement appropriate repairs.

  9. Compliance: Ensure that all HVAC work complies with local, state, and national codes and regulations. Stay updated on changes in HVAC standards and best practices.

  10. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of HVAC work performed, including installations, repairs, and maintenance. Provide detailed reports and documentation to clients and supervisors.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an HVAC training program or vocational school preferred
  • Relevant certification or license (as required by local regulations), such as EPA Certification for refrigerant handling
  • Proven experience as an HVAC technician or in a similar role
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, components, and repair techniques
  • Proficiency in using HVAC diagnostic tools and equipment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and HVAC codes
  • Good physical stamina and manual dexterity
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with clients and team members
